Upcoming Public Hearing To Discuss Changes to Gainesville Intersections

December 31, 2019

Southwest 34th Street, Southwest Second Avenue and West University Avenue experience serious congestion regularly, leading residents to consider the roads a major public safety concern in past years.

Dozens of accidents have taken place at the intersections of W University Ave & SW 34th as well as SW 2nd Ave & SW 34th, including a scooter fatality in October 2014.

In light of these persisting concerns, the Florida Department of Transportation has arranged a hearing at Holy Faith Catholic Church, located at 747 NE 43rd St. Attendees will have a chance to look over proposed solutions and chat with project coordinators.

The event will be on Monday, January 6th at 4 p.m. An open house will be held from 4-6 p.m. with public discussion beginning at 6 p.m. Possible solutions include adding a bike lane to SW 34th, closing certain median openings, and improving lighting and drainage. Check out this article to see requirements for speaking at the forum as well as the full list of proposed solutions released by FDOT.
