Gainesville and the University of Florida have yet another accolade that they can be proud of. According to the recent ranking from US News & World Report, UF Health Shands Children's Hospital was ranked among the country's top 50 children's hospitals, with a national ranking in six out of ten pediatric specialties, including neonatology, cancer care, diabetes and endocrinology, cardiology and heart surgery, and neurology and neurosurgery.
The Gainesville institution was one of only three hospitals in Florida that made the US News Top 50 list. Miami's Nicklaus Children's Hospital ranked in eight out of ten specialties, and Orlando's Arnold Palmer Hospital ranked in five out of ten specialties.
UF Health Shands Children's Hospital's cardiology and heart surgery program has previously been "recognized by other organizations as one of the best," and clearly it just continues to prevail. This department had the highest scores as compared with other ranked departments, "moving up three places to 21st in this year's rankings."
Rankings by US News are awarded based on "clinical outcomes, patient safety and nurse staffing." Last year's adult hospital Top 50 rankings included UF Health Shands, which was tied with Mayo Clinic Jacksonville, as the top hospital in Florida, with national rankings in eight adult specialties. North Florida Regional Medical Center was ranked number 18 in Florida.
