Cade Museum completion on horizon

June 24, 2017

The completion of the highly anticipated Cade Museum for Creativity and Invention is finally in sight, with the grand opening slated for the Spring of 2018. Construction of the museum began in May 2016, and fundraising for the $10 million project began nine years before that. The massively stunning 26,000 square-foot museum standing two stories tall is located at the corner of Depot Avenue and South Main Street in the heart of Gainesville,  will honor "nephrologist and former UF professor Dr. Robert Cade, the man who lead a team of researchers to create Gatorade more than 50 years ago."

Dr. Cade was the University of Florida's first kidney specialist, and he, along with three other researchers, invented Gatorade in 1965 "as a way to give the UF football team extra energy during practice and games." The sports drink addressed the problem of dehydration with a formula of water, sodium, potassium and glucose.

The museum aims to offer programs, classes and events that are "taught through and by inventors and their inventions." There will be a strong focus on the STEAM curriculum, which includes science, technology, engineering art and math.

While the beautiful new building is not complete, the Cade Museum currently offers classes and camps located at the Cade Fab Lab and Cade Creativity Lab Office at 904 South Main Street across from where the final museum will stand.
