Ride-hailing is not new to Gainesville residents, as Uber has been in town for a little while. But now, Gainesville residents have another option, as Lyft officially began providing service in Gainesville last week.
Just like Uber, Lyft users find drivers, order rides and pay for the service using the downloaded app on their smartphone. The app allows users to see what their final cost will be (only an estimate if it's a shared ride) before confirming the pick-up, and riders as well as drivers rate each other via the app.
Lyft is based in San Francisco, California, and operates in approximately 35 cities around Florida and roughly 300 cities around the entire country. The company develops, markets and operates its own software application.
Lyft offers three types of rides within the app: "Lyft Line," which is not available in all cities, is the most economical option and matches passengers with other riders on their route. "Lyft" is the basic offering that links passengers with nearby drivers. "Lyft Plus" offers passengers a six-seat car option, and "Lyft Premier" offers a luxury car option.
Lyft was established in 2012 and has been hugely successful. It is certain to drum up a bit of competition for Uber in Gainesville. New riders to Lyft can download the app and use the code LYFTLOVE17 to receive five dollars off of their first lift ride.
