Gainesville Modern Weekend, an annual showcase of the town's mid century homes, begins this weekend. Events throughout the weekend are intended to help "preserve the history of modern style and to promote the future of design and architecture."
The Merits of Meritt event kicks off the weekend tonight from 6 to 8 PM and will feature a tour of the home designed by Harry Merritt and recently restored. The event will also showcase drawings, photographs and video highlighting the architect, and cocktails and hors d'oeuvres will be served. This extremely popular event is already sold out.
On Saturday, the much anticipated Gainesville Modern Mid Century Home Tour will showcase six of Gainesville's mid century homes. Tickets for the tour are $20 cash at the door or $10 for students, and homes can be viewed between 11 AM and 3 PM.
On Sunday, there will be a screening of a documentary that tells a story about two architects who "implement a design-build curriculum in a rural North Carolina high school." A panel discussion will follow the documentary screening that is aimed at exploring the ways in which the city of Gainesville could benefit from a similar initiative. The documentary screening and panel discussion will take place from 4-6:30pm at the GFAA gallery.
This fantastic weekend provides a great opportunity for residents and visitors alike to see all that Gainesville has to offer in terms of mid century modern architecture and design. For more details, be sure to visit gainesvillemodern.org.
