A new plant opened in Gainesville and will be responsible for manufacturing vaccines and drug treatments aimed at protecting soldiers from both chemical and biological threats.
Nanotherapeutics' new plant, located near Progress Park in Alachua County, is a $138 million-project occupying a whopping 183,000 square feet of space. The recent opening of and ribbon-cutting ceremony for this tremendous plant was attended by officials from the Department of Defense, Health and Human Services, Homeland Security, as well as local government. The construction of the facility fulfills a grant from the Department of Defense that may be worth as much as $359 million.
By February, the plant will be fully operational and will begin to produce stockpiles of vaccines and treatments for the military against infectious diseases as well as bioterrorism. Nanotherapeutics employs approximately 190 people, with over 120 of those employees in Alachua.
The opening of the facility intends to speed up and better control vaccine and drug manufacturing in a timely and cost efficient manner.
