There are a few new commercial development projects on the horizon that Gainesville can get excited about. Perhaps the biggest project is the redevelopment of the former Gainesville Regional Utilities control center at Northwest 43rd Street and 53rd Avenue across from the Hunter’s Crossing Publix. The plan is to develop three buildings that will house a Starbucks with a drive-through, a bank with a drive-through and a medical building with an ambulance entrance.
A Clearwater developer has submitted the plans for this project to the city for the 2.7-acre property. The City Plan Board is scheduled to consider permitting the project at its June 23rd meeting. The property owner, who also owns the Chevron gas station on the southeast corner of the block, said Boos Development Group has a contract to buy the property.
Boos Development has already built many CVS pharmacies and a Family Dollar in Gainesville. The company also has plans to redevelop a 35-acre wooded plot of land at Williston Road and Southwest 34th Street.
The current GRU property was rezoned in 2011 from public services and operations to mixed use in order to open it to private ownership and development. The property was purchased for $1.6 million in 2015. The existing 11,000 square-foot building there would be demolished.
Another exciting commercial development project is the newer, bigger ABC Fine Wine and Spirits at 6621 Newberry Road across from the Oaks Mall, replacing the old University Avenue location that has been there since the 1970s.
The new store will be more than double the size, occupying approximately 10,000 square feet on the main floor, plus storage place on a second floor. The new store is slated to open the first week of July. ABC plans to sell its University Avenue property, but nothing has been confirmed.
