Gainesville Airport receives grant for improvements

June 19, 2015

gville airportThe Gainesville Regional Airport has received a grant from the Federal Aviation Administration for renovations and expansions. There will be a new emergency response building, renovated runway lights and expanded aircraft parking.

As passenger traffic continues to increase, these renovations become even more important and are part of a 20-year master plan for the airport. Airport traffic has increased 8% in the last year alone.

Furthermore, the aircraft rescue and firefighting building hasn’t been renovated since its construction in 1979. The new design will increase its size from 5,600 square feet to 7,000 square feet, while also making important upgrades.

The current grant amount is almost $2.5 million, however the final estimate has yet to be determined, so the grant amount could change when project costs become available.
